The Diploma Degree in Chemistry, specialising in Packaging & Packing Technology, was first introduced in 1998 at Parma University’s Faculty of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences. This is the only university course in Italy dedicated to the world of packaging. The aim of the university course at Parma is to train professionals with advanced skills in packaging technology. The course is intended to produce graduates with the necessary skills:
• to design and develop new packaging - and to improve on existing designs - based on criteria of cost, marketing, production, supply, protection and preservation of the product being packed and ease of use for the consumer, bearing in mind the relevant legal requirements;
• to design new packing techniques and to perfect existing ones;
• to collaborate with the R&D, marketing, production, purchasing and quality departments, providing the necessary instructions;
• prepare the technical specifications for the materials, packaging, machines and packing lines;
• to organize the laboratory tests required to guarantee compatibility between the product and the packaging;
• to analyse existing packaging solutions and compare these with those used in other sectors, with the aim of producing improvements and innovation;
• to follow the evolution of technologies in the world of packaging: materials, machines, methods and processes.
