Address: 1300 Wilson Blvd. Suite 800
City: Arlington, VA - 22209
Country: United States
The American Plastics Council (APC) is a major trade association for the United States plastics industry working to ensure that plastics are recognized as a preferred material by actively demonstrating they are a responsible choice in a more environmentally conscious world.
To accomplish our mission we demonstrate the benefits of plastic products and the contributions of the plastics industry to the society it serves.
We also demonstrate that plastics are an efficient use of natural resources and that plastics and the industry are part of the solution to the public's environmental performance expectations.
Our members are among the nation's largest manufacturers of plastics. APC also includes five business units and an affiliated trade association, each comprised of APC members and customers whose purpose is to address technical and public policy issues specific to their products.
Our business units include; Alliance for the Polyurethanes Industry (API), Polycarbonate Business Unit, Polystyrene Packaging Council (PSPC), Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance (SPFA), Foamed Polystyrene Alliance (FPSA). The Vinyl Institute (VI) is our affiliated trade association.
COUNCIL'S ACTIVITIES
Educational Efforts
APC communicates directly and openly with thought leaders active on environmental issues. We do this through our various partnerships and strategic alliances with, for instance, fellow trade associations and government agencies. Most importantly, we understand the importance of reaching out to young people before their opinions are crystallized based on incomplete or inaccurate information; therefore, we are constantly exploring new and exciting educational programs that reach out to young people and fire their imaginations about the benefits of plastics.
Research and Development
APC continues to develop rigorously researched industry data and solutions addressing plastics and the environment. For instance, we have offered substantial support to the research and development of recovery and recycling technologies for both durable goods (e.g., automobiles and business equipment) and packaging. The information learned from the programs is transferred to manufacturers, recyclers, communities and others through our outreach programs, which, in turn, helps to improve the efficiency and the cost effectiveness of recycling programs and maximize plastics recycling that is economically and environmentally responsible and sustainable.
Benefits Communications
APC’s national "Plastics Make it Possible" advertising campaign communicates the benefits of plastics by highlighting the many ways in which they help make our lives safer, healthier and easier.
Publications, Videos and Manuals
We have a variety of publications, videos, fact sheets and studies designed to help industry professionals, policy makers and the public understand the benefits of plastics and their role in resource conservation.
Government Affairs/Grassroots
APC Government Affairs representation at the federal, state and local levels works to deliver resource conservation and plastics benefits messages to legislators and local audiences, bolster APC's grassroots program and advance legislation that is beneficial to the plastics industry.
To encourage grassroots activity, APC coordinates the development of state-based plastic industry groups and facilitates local meetings and plant tours. APC works with local processors to showcase the plastics industry and its economic benefits.
Plastics in Automotives
Plastic's role in the automotive market is growing as designers and stylists recognize how the material combines low cost with greater design flexibility. Plastics are being used in many ways, including high temperature applications under the hood and in impact areas like bumpers. To better serve this key market, APC recently opened its Automotive Learning Center in Troy, MI.
