The European Council for Plasticisers and Intermediates (ECPI) is based in Brussels and has a membership of 21 companies involved in the production of plasticisers.

ECPI is a sector group of a much larger trade body, CEFIC, the European Chemical Industry Council. CEFIC represents the views and interests of the European chemical industry at an European Union level.

Plasticisers are esters (mainly phthalates) which are generally used in the production of flexible plastic products, predominantly polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

Intermediates are the raw materials used to produce plasticisers and include alcohols, which range from methanol (Cl) to tridecanol (C13) and phthalic anhydride. The main aim of ECPI is to provide interested parties with clear and concise information, supported by extensive scientific research, which demonstrates that plasticisers do not pose a risk to health or the environment.

Based on its extensive knowledge of the industry, many decades of experience, and its wealth of scientific data, the ECPI secretariat is also able to provide valuable input to legislative and regulatory authorities, non-government organisations and consumer groups. It encourages dialogue between these groups and it actively supports research programmes.

Furthermore, ECPI regularly conducts and commissions its own research and maintains constant contact with the manufacturing companies which rely upon plasticisers to produce raw materials used in the production of such everyday items as plastic medical products, flooring, wallcovering, toys, stationery and electrical cable.
