The Institute has long enjoyed an international reputation for its research, and was rated 4A in the 1996 research assessment exercise. All academic staff in the Institute have a substantial commitment to research.

In a broad sense the Institute is concerned with interactions of the structure, morphology, and properties of materials (polymers, metals, and ceramics) with processing and with product performance. Individual programmes are associated with research groups and team effort (often interdisciplinary) is regarded as being of prime importance in achieving work of the highest quality. An informed awareness of the current and future needs of the broad range of industries dependent on knowledge of materials science and engineering significantly influences our research areas.

Sources of financial support for this research are the EPSRC and other UK agencies, the European Union programmes, and industry world-wide. At any given time, we have about 12 research associates and about 50 PhD students. Some of the latter are working in industry, which highlights our close and comprehensive contacts with the manufacturing sector.

The Institute's activities are centred on three internationally recognised research groups. If you are interested in an area not specifically mentioned in their summary pages, it could well be that we do have an activity in that field. Activities cover many fundamental and applied aspects of Materials Science and Engineering. An impressive equipment base underpins the Institute's research activities. Contact the Research Coordinator for further information.
